Sensory Based Predicates
by James Middleton – Thursday, 20 May 2010, 11:20 PM

If a person’s predicates have been learned from his parents, does this mean that he has the same limitations as his parents when processing information, or are the predicates learned independently of the ability to process information in each sense system.

Clearly we learn our early predicate choice from our surrounding environment – but I believe as we learn, develop, grow and change, so too does our personal preferences for which predicates we choose to process information with.

Predicate choice is a preference and not a limitation in and of itself.  If our processing seems limited by our predicate preferences then it would seem that we might be limited.  The therapist’s job in these situations could be to expand that capability perhaps by communicating initially by using their preferences and then slowly adding other non preferred predicates into the conversation.

I think Chalotte C. Bretto explains it well in the framework for excellence manual, it cites:

Representational system primacy

As an individual matures he/she learns to use …………………
